Revoking AFSPA in J&K: Amit Shah’s Proposal
In a significant move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the government’s contemplation to revoke the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). This decision comes with plans to withdraw troops from the region and entrust law enforcement solely to the J&K Police.
Empowering J&K Police for Law and Order
Shah emphasized the evolving trust in the capabilities of the J&K Police, highlighting their increased effectiveness in managing operations. He declared, “We intend to withdraw troops and entrust law and order solely to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.”
Reevaluation of AFSPA
Addressing the controversial AFSPA, Shah asserted, “We will also think of revoking AFSPA.” This act grants extensive powers to armed forces personnel in disturbed areas, including the authority to conduct searches, make arrests, and use force if deemed necessary for public order maintenance.
Democratic Promise: Assembly Elections and Inclusive Governance
Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy in J&K, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to uphold democratic principles. He assured that democracy in the region would extend beyond a few political families, fostering a people-centric governance model.
Inclusive Reservation Policies
Discussing reservation policies, Shah highlighted the Modi government’s initiatives to empower marginalized communities in J&K. Notably, OBCs received reservations for the first time, alongside enhanced provisions for SCs, STs, and women. These measures aim to ensure equitable representation and opportunities at the grassroots level.
Combatting Terrorism and Ensuring Peace
Shah underscored the government’s resolve to combat terrorism and promote peace in the region. Stringent actions, including bans on terror organizations and crackdowns on terror financing, reflect the commitment to safeguarding national security interests.
Engagement with Youth and Exclusion of Extremist Elements
Emphasizing dialogue with Kashmiri youth, Shah reiterated the government’s stance against extremist organizations with links to Pakistan. He affirmed the exclusion of groups like the Hurriyat Conference from the dialogue process, asserting India’s sovereignty over the entirety of J&K, including Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK).
